Growing up

I know it's been happening all along, but sometimes it seems like the boys have grown up months just overnight. Nick has been sleeping in his big boy bed now for almost a week now and we're starting to talk about getting the crib out of his room (ok, this one may be overdue!). He has also pee-ed on the potty every night at bathtime for several nights now (sticker chart seems to be a great motivator - we reminded him today that he gets 2 stickers for a poop on the potty - he seemed excited at the prospect....!) Wow!

Tim is also growing by leaps and bounds! He just officially outgrew his 3-6 month clothes and we passed those along to Soren and opened up Mason's 6-9 month box. It was sad to have to pack away some of the adorable outfits but since Mason was such a well-dressed kiddo, there are plenty of equally cute ones to choose from now. It seems that Tim also got his second tooth today too! Wow, again!

Despite the crazy humidity here, we took the boys to the Folk Festival in Bangor today. They both were very well behaved and seemed to have a great time. I'll have Greg add a great video clip of Nick dancing :)

In other news:

Not to be outdone by cousin Zoe, Tim broke his first tooth today. It hasn't completely popped yet but you can feel it when he chews on your finger... Holy cow!

funny guy

Just a quick anecdote from this evening (then continue on to read Greg's great post below).... Nick helped me pick carrots, cukes and lettuce in the garden this afternoon while Tim napped.  He gets soo excited looking for all of the vegetables and can identify a lot of them by the plants already.  Anyhow, he did a great job with it and decided that he wants to be a farmer when he grows up.  When we came inside, he told Dad who then asked what he'd grow.  Nick's reply was "taller" :)

Seattle Trip, Delisle Family Reunion, and more...

Sorry once again for the long posting drought. It's been a busy couple of weeks, and once again the blog-reading public must suffer for it. Our apologies.

The week before last, I (Greg) was in Seattle for a work trip, while Amy stayed home with the kids doing the real work that makes what I do possible. The trip was great, got to see the family again, got to visit with friends, and got to see what remains of Rich and Katy's house (it's in the process of being extensively remodeled and is going to one day look great).

The day after I got back from Seattle, we drove down to Aunt Pauline and Uncle Skip's house for a reunion of the extended Delisle clan. Won't try to list everyone who was there because I'm bound to forget someone I should remember. Reminded me a lot of the reunions we used to have when we were kids, only this one was in the summer, not at Christmas time, and at the beach, not in a stuffy church hall. Less cigarette smoke than I remember as well...

The kids did great at the reunion. Nick got to play with some of his extended cousins, while Tim spent the whole day smiling his little head off at everyone as he was passed from aunt to aunt (don't think he touched the floor the whole time the reunion was going on). How did Amy and I, quiet and reserved as we apparently seem to most people, produce such a little social butterfly? He revels in attention and just gets flirtier and flirtier as time goes on. Nick, for his part, seemed to love the fact that he had not just one but two surrogate Nanas between Aunt Pauline and Aunt Madeleine.

This past week's been busy as usual with all the little things that occupy our time. Tim has started showing a real interest in solid food - he stares at Amy's food as she eats dinner and frequently makes grabs at slices of pizza or bits of pasta. Despite not having any teeth at all, he's also shown himself willing to make a valiant effort at gumming whatever he can get his little mitts on (see the picture below with the cucumber slice to see what I mean).

Which of course brings me to the real meat of these posts, and the real reason you slog your respective ways through my ramblings, the pictures. In reviewing this post's selection of pictures, I see that it is heavily weighted towards Tim this time, purely by accident. Before I hear moans from the Nicholas fans in the audience, please rest assured that future postings will remedy this.

You know you're cute when you can pull off the plaid overalls look:

Hot hot hot

Man, it sure has been hot here! To combat the heat, we've been spending a good amount of time in the water, either in our backyard, at Amanda & Kevin's pool or at the beach. We had a successful trip to the beach at Swan Lake last Thursday with Amanda, Soren & Grandma. Nick practiced his crazy swimming skills with the adults

while Tim lounged in the shade:

We had a nice visit with the Robenhymers and Griffins on Friday (which was probably the hottest day of all last week - I was melting!) It was great to see them all, even if the visit was short. Nick was a little confused by Aunt Madeleine and Aunt Pauline (they were both Aunt Pauline to him!) but seemed to get it straight after a few hours.

Nick sounded out his first word completely solo on Saturday: "bark". Yikes, there's no denying that he's reading now!

Tall tales and more

Yikes! Its August already! The summer has flown by so far but we've still got hopefully a couple of weeks of nice warm weather ahead before fall starts in. Nick has been having a great time swimming this summer. His latest trick, perfected today at Aunt Amanda & Uncle Kevin's pool, is going underwater! We're still working on getting the legs and arms moving at the same time to help him keep his head up, but at least now, he's not upset if he goes under :)

Right along side his mad swimming skills, Nick's imagination is also starting to blossom! A couple of nights ago at dinner, he told us that Nana and Auntie Pauline were in a "jet-ski airplane" (seaplane?) that landed in our driveway that afternoon. (I checked but didn't see any planes) And, yesterday, when we passed by a field that usually has cows in it, I heard that the cows were actually in our backyard that day and that's why we didn't see them there. Hmmm, you don't say.....

Tim is quite a chatterbox these days with lots to say about everything! He's been having a great time with his toys and LOVES his exersaucer. I'm probably jinxing myself by putting this in writing, but since it'll likely end soon, I might as well celebrate - Tim has been sleeping through the night for almost a week now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Yes, all of those exclamation points are appropriate!) And, when I say "through the night", I don't mean just a random 6 hr stretch that could potentially end at 2 in the morning - I mean from 8PM or so until 5AM!! Not sure what prompted it, why it started all of the sudden, but I'm certainly not complaining!!
