intro to finance

Nick has recently become fascinated with money and that you can possibly acquire new Legos with money. He's been collecting some in his piggy bank - through chores around the yard and a lot of scavenging :) We talked about putting some of the money in the bank, for safe keeping and he wasn't so interested until he learned that he could make more money just by doing that.

So, yesterday afternoon, we ventured down to Maine Savings and opened Nick's (and Tim's) first savings accounts. The boys were excited at first, and eager to get going. They answered questions, got their photos taken and even signed their own names for their accounts. Tim was particularly enamored with the electronic signing machine thing (the technical name) and wanted to draw some pictures on it, like his own magnadoodle... Nick handed over his piggy bank, and was thrilled to get some coins back (since the bank wouldn't take the foreign money he'd collected). The highlight of the day was definitely the lollipops they received at the end!

While he's definitely starting to understand, Nick still isn't completely clear on how the whole bank thing works since as we were leaving, he asked if they were going to put his money in a small bowl with his name on it :)

Kuplink kuplank kuplunk

The whole family took a hike up Blue Hill Mountain on a beautiful Sunday morning this a few weeks back. Everyone did a super job making it the whole way up AND back without being carried although I was thinking about asking at one point ;).

We all had a great time on the way up and were thrilled with the beautiful view from the top

where we enjoyed a picnic lunch

and a little blueberry picking

No outing would be complete without a special snack once we finished up

encouraging a budding writer

Nick loves to write and will spell things on his own, which we are totally encouraging (especially given his reluctance to write up until about a year ago). But, I'm wondering if it might be time to draw the line...

The author, quite pleased with himself... :)

B2B

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to run the 13th annual Beach to Beacon 10k this year. What a great time! For those who aren't familiar, the race is a pretty big deal here in Maine. And after participating in it, I see why. There is something about it that is magical - I can't quite put my finger on it. If you ever do get the chance to do it, definitely join in!

I'm going to piggyback on others' tales of the experience because they told the story so well :)

You can read Emilie's recount here and Christine's version here.

I've always felt like Maine is a little more isolated than other parts of the country, but this race brings the world to Maine, with the elite runners who are hosted by Maine families, as described here.

All in all, another amazing experience!

a day by the shore

The boys and I went for a little adventure around Sears Island a few weeks ago. We headed out, armed with buckets and a picnic lunch, ready to explore some new territory.

They were delighted by the walk along the beach, collecting treasures along the way.

They did a little wading

and exploring tide pools

as well as some rock throwing

not to mention a little monkeying around

It was a gorgeous day

The treasure hunting was VERY successful

another great adventure :)
