smashing job
The boys joined me for a little garden cleanup time a few weeks ago. They really got into the destruction phase of gardening much more than the growing part :)
Here they are stepping on and spearing rotten tomatoes (with bamboo stakes)

and then, of course, flinging them around

Tim did a little hoeing with his garden tools that we'd lost in the mass of weeds earlier in the summer...

We took advantage of the nice weather to take care of some of the pumpkins that had started to melt too. Before they made it to the compost pile though, Nick wanted to smash them in the driveway.... makes me wonder what I'm in for in a few years?!

We're thankful for...
At dinner on Tuesday, we went around the table and told each other what we were thankful for. The boys went first and both of them said their family (and their dog too). Warms my heart :)
I'm so thankful for a wonderful family, amazing friends, good health, and great fortune. Hope that everyone has a warm, happy and peaceful Thanksgiving!

What I'm listening to at the moment...
The buddies went up for bed about a half an hour ago. We usually let them do a little quiet reading with the hall light on before we announce lights out. Most nights, "quiet reading" really means running around, jumping on (or off) the beds, making forts out of the pillows and blankets, etc. Tonight, however, it seems to have turned into a science lesson!
Nick is currently reading his kids' encyclopedia to Tim. The book includes information on a wide variety of topics like geography, biology, astronomy, etc, and they're actually having a real discussion about it. Nick mentioned that India had originally been on its own and that it had crashed into Asia, forming the Himalayas. He also pointed out that that's how Mt Everest was formed and that it was the tallest mountain on Earth. Lots of oohs and aahs from Tim. They then started talking about the Great Wall of China (apparently they're flipping through the book pretty much at random), at which point Tim announced that we needed to go to China. Nick quickly disabused him of that idea by mentioning that we had lots of other places to go first (didn't quite catch where). He then announced that he had to go pee and invited his brother along Tim, to his credit, declined.
Great to see the two of them getting along and nerding out together. Such a welcome change from last night when Nick decided that he hated Tim (Tim had knocked over part of the huge "fort" Nick had erected in the middle of the room). We had a discussion of why that wasn't a nice thing to say, especially since he probably didn't mean it (he eventually agreed that he sometimes says nasty things that he doesn't really mean when he's angry).
Oh wait, sounds like they're starting to build a fort again. Oh well, it was great while it lasted... ;)

visit with friends
Danielle and Mike came up for a visit a few weekends ago. It was great to see them, (and actually to meet Mike). As always, the kids had a great time keeping them busy :) Who better to play Legos with than a house full of engineers ;)
Here they are on a walk in the woods behind the library (after Lego club)

and playing Legos

Some of the masterpieces of the weekend

We're a little low on pictures since I had to leave the fun early to head to southern Maine for another great run with the girls, the last race of the season :)
Susan and Suzanne ran too - they were just way ahead :)

Art nouveau
Here are a couple of masterpieces created by our own Nicholas, just this afternoon:

My Playground by Nicholas
Note Tim on the swing, Nick in the treehouse, me taking a picture of Nick (with my back to the artist) and Greg carrying something on his head.

My Family Underground by Nick
We are digging for dinosaur bones in the backyard. Greg found one that he is standing on. Great job Greg!

old times
While we were laying low with our latest bout of illness here, Tim and I were looking at old videos and reminiscing... well, as much as a 3 year old can reminisce :)
I'm constantly surprised at how much he's changed in such a short amount of time, and at how stinkin' cute he was (and still is, don't get me wrong). And that is a completely unbiased opinion...

visit with good friends
What a treat! A few weeks back, Tim and I had a chance to meet up with good friends who moved from Maine to Colorado a couple of years ago. We miss them so much and were thrilled to hear that they were going to be down on MDI for a few days for a conference. So we put Nick on the bus and then hopped in the car for a quick ride down to the island!

We had a great time catching up ,

meeting the latest (and totally adorable) addition to their family!

and watching the boys play together.

They were like 2 peas in a pod :)

Such a great visit!

A little more Halloween
We had a great Halloween weekend which included some pumpkin carving, a few parties and some trick-or-treating.

Getting ready for trick-or-treating next to Boodle, the cheeseburger (what a perfect costume!)

Soren the robot came along too

Tim needed to look inside each luminary bag down the whole driveway

My princess Leia costume wasn't as good with the fleece on but considering that the temps were in the 30's, the fleece was vital....

Nick had the trick-or-treating thing down

The boys took in quite a haul in the 45 minutes that we managed to survive the cold... and they've also been having quite a bit of fun getting rid of the candy... :)

Fall is here
and that means snow here in Maine...
We got our first snowfall yesterday on Halloween morning. Lovely but a little bit of a shock since it seems like we just got rid of the snow from last year....

The kids thought it was pretty cool though and Nick exclaimed that he is so excited that it is winter again! That's a good thing since he lives here! :)
